About Maramures
Maramureş region, and also country, is situated in the far North of Roumania. It is a region of high hills and mountains, therefore, most of the products that we will sell here are made of wood, the wooden craftmen from Maramureş are wordwide famous for the wooden sculptures, mainly traditional one wood-piece gates. You may find here the oldest traditions and habits from Roumania, due to the fact that the people living here are very fond of their traditions, history and popular folk objects.
They are considering themselves the purest people living in nowadays Roumania, very serious, honest, hard-working and mainly brave – because this region was the only region that the Romans couldn’t occupy under the invasions and conquest of Dacia (they used to call themselves “free – Dacians” and some of them still prefer to call themselves “free – Dacians”. The most common handmade traditional objects that you can find on this site to buy are: ceramics, Dracula souvenir, wood products, dolls and masks, textiles.
About Dracula
Dracula is the most famous myth that Roumania possesses. The legend of Dracula is famous worldwide, there were written a lot of books and made a lot of films. Dracula is the visid representation of the king of Roumania – Vlad “the Devil”. He used to call himself Vlad “the Devil”, “the Impaler” (because he used to impale villains in long sticks), or “the Dragon” (because he and his father were members of the Order of Dragons – founded by Harold, King of England).
Dracula is a legend but even many Romaniens believe in this legend. The difference is that the Europeans consider him a vampire, the natives consider him and his follows a “strigoi” (rom. W.) – a “living-dead”. That is why all the objects displayed for selling (no matter the type: pictures, clocks, etc) present a scary and sinister version of this cruel but fair king.
